Bulk XML Sitemap Checker

A sitemap is the shortest path between your content and search engines, but only while it is actually reachable, valid and fresh.

More about this tool

This bulk checker walks a whole list of domains and answers the questions that matter before a crawler ever complains: does the sitemap exist and where (Sitemap directives in robots.txt are honored, then the default /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml paths are tried), does it parse as a proper urlset or a sitemap index, how many URLs does it declare, and when was its newest lastmod — with the age in days highlighted once it crosses your own threshold. Sitemap indexes get an extra pass: the child sitemaps are fetched as well, so the total URL coverage is one number, not guesswork. Errors are equally practical: a 404, a redirect chain that ends nowhere, an empty file or an accidentally broken XML all come back with a plain-language verdict and a recommendation of what to fix. Export the finished report to CSV and it becomes a rollout checklist for site migrations and cleanups.

How it works

  1. Paste up to 100 items, one per line. Duplicates are removed automatically.
  2. If a line contains a full URL, only its host name is used.
  3. The check runs in the background; the results page shows live progress.
  4. Filter the report by status code and export it to CSV.

Rate limit: 5 jobs per hour from one IP address. Results are stored for 7 days.

FAQ

How is the sitemap located?

Three steps, in order. First, the tool reads /robots.txt and honors every Sitemap: directive — that is the officially recommended way to announce a sitemap. If robots.txt has none (or is unreachable), the standard /sitemap.xml path is tried, then /sitemap_index.xml (a common location for WordPress plugins). The first one that answers with a parseable sitemap wins, and the exact URL used is shown in the row details.

What is checked inside a sitemap index?

A sitemap index lists child sitemap files instead of URLs. The checker counts the children and — unless disabled in the form — fetches up to five of them, validating each and summing their URL counts into the total. Indexes with more than five children are reported with the child count alone, so large sites stay fast to check; every fetched child is listed in the details.

Why does a fresh lastmod matter?

Crawlers use lastmod to decide how eagerly to re-visit URLs. If the newest lastmod in your sitemap is months old, search engines reasonably conclude the content is stale and slow down — exactly when you may be publishing daily. The checker shows the age of the newest lastmod in days and highlights it once it crosses the threshold you set (30 days by default), so a forgotten generator becomes visible at a glance.

Does it validate every URL in the sitemap?

No — this tool audits the sitemap itself, not every page behind it. Counting URLs and reading lastmod dates is instant; requesting thousands of pages would be slow and impolite to your hosting. If you need per-URL statuses, export the sitemap URLs and run them through the Bulk URL Status Checker — the two tools are designed to chain this way.

Can the check load my server?

The load is a handful of GET requests per domain: robots.txt, one or two sitemap candidates, and up to five child sitemaps. Sitemap bodies are capped at 3 MB each, and the request timeout is configurable. That is lighter than a single search-engine crawl of the same files.
