HTTP Compression Checker (gzip, brotli)

Paste one URL and get measured facts instead of guesses: the Content-Encoding the server actually picks for a browser-like request (gzip, brotli, deflate — or none), the uncompressed size, the compressed size as it…

More about this tool

travels the wire, and the savings in percent. The verdict knows the difference between a small page where compression does not matter and a 200 KB HTML monster shipping uncompressed, and the recommendation names the exact directives for nginx, Apache or your CDN. The bulk version measures a whole list of URLs — a template fleet or a client's site section — in one job with a CSV export.

How it works

  1. Type or paste one address (domain or URL).
  2. Press Check — the page opens the result right away.
  3. Read the verdict: green means fine, orange means attention, red means a problem; the recommendation tells you what to do.

Free: 30 fresh checks per hour from one IP; repeats within 10 minutes are served from cache and cost nothing.

Checking many domains at once?

The bulk version of this tool takes a whole list (one address per line), builds a live report and exports it to CSV.

FAQ

How is the savings percentage computed?

Two measurements of the same page: the uncompressed body size (fetched with automatic decoding, like a browser cache would store it) and the compressed body size (fetched with an explicit Accept-Encoding header and no decoding, counting bytes on the wire). Savings = 1 − compressed / uncompressed. That is the real number your users' traffic drops by — not a theoretical benchmark.

gzip or brotli — which should I use?

Both are fine; brotli compresses text roughly 15–20% tighter at comparable speed, and every modern browser supports it — but only over HTTPS (CDNs simply refuse brotli on plain HTTP). The practical recipe: enable brotli for text content and keep gzip as the fallback; images, video and archives are already compressed — do not waste CPU re-compressing them. The checker reports whichever encoding the server actually picked for a browser-like request.

Why does a small page show no savings?

Pages under 1 KB skip the second measuring pass: compressing a few hundred bytes saves less than the compression header itself weighs. For small pages the tool reports the encoding the server declares, without nagging about percentages — attention is directed at 32 KB+ responses where compression actually matters.

How do I enable compression?

nginx: gzip on; gzip_types text/css application/javascript application/json image/svg+xml; (brotli via the ngx_brotli module: brotli on; brotli_types …). Apache: LoadModule deflate_module + AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE …. Behind a CDN, enable compression in the CDN settings first — the origin's headers may be overridden at the edge. Re-run this check afterwards to verify the savings actually materialized.
